Sometimes spirit gives me evidence in the most mysterious ways.
A song kept playing in my mind during a reading, but I couldn’t fully identify it. I couldn’t even hum it clearly. Only a few words floated in faintly:
“…thousand miles…”
I said to the beautiful young mother sitting in front of me,
“I’ll figure it out sometime soon.”
I knew the song was being given to me by her son to help her through her grief.
It was strange because I often receive songs in readings, and they almost always hold deep significance for the sitter. But this one felt distant, almost like it was playing from another room. I could tell it was from the 90s, and somehow it felt connected to a movie.
That mother’s name was Jennifer.
She had booked a reading hoping to connect with her son, Josiah, who had recently passed in a tragic gun accident at just 23 years old. She brought her best friend and stepdaughter with her.
Their grief sat heavily in the room.
From the moment I linked with Josiah, I could feel the profound bond between mother and son. Jennifer had been only 17 when she gave birth to him. The two of them had lived through 23 years of struggle, growth, and fierce love together. Her best friend, sitting beside her during the reading, had helped her through those difficult early years of raising a baby with very little family support.
As I always do, I gave my opening line:
“Let me talk, and please don’t feed the medium.”
I say this because I don’t want clients to begin reminiscing too soon. If they start filling in the blanks, it can pull me out of my link with spirit. I want spirit to speak first so the evidence is strong enough for the client to feel their loved one is truly in the room.
Josiah did not disappoint.
His opening evidence was all about his need for speed. He immediately showed me himself riding bikes and motorcycles. Then he proceeded to run both hands through his thick, beautiful hair.
His energy imprint came through as kind, funny, and deeply aware of his mother’s pain.
I told Jennifer,
“He was so good-looking.”
I could feel that even as a baby, people would stop just to admire how beautiful he was. She nodded immediately in understanding.
I could also feel his concern for her and for the rest of the family.
Then he gave me the knowledge of how he died:
“My death was stupid.”
His words, not mine.
I told Jennifer exactly what he said and explained that he was taking responsibility, showing me that he had a hand in what happened. I kept sensing a dare, a challenge, or a reckless moment surrounding his passing, though he would not show me the exact death itself.
When I asked if that resonated, all three of them nodded through tears.
As I spoke about him, my head began to hurt, another piece of physical evidence that often comes when spirit impresses their experience onto me.
But then his hair came forward again.
It was important to his identity and to something more.
He suddenly showed me a vivid, movie-like image of Jennifer trimming small pieces of his hair after his passing to keep as a remembrance. I often receive clairvoyant clips like this, as if spirit is replaying a memory for me.
I asked if she understood that.
She said yes.
She told me that the people at the morgue had even brought her a bowl to catch his amazing locks.
Then he told me what he thought about it.
I paused and gently asked,
“Do you want to know what he thinks about that?”
She nodded yes.
So I gave her his exact words to me:
“Mom, that was so weird.”
The room erupted in laughter.
And in that sacred moment, grief cracked open.
Laughter entered where sorrow had been sitting like stone.
That is one of the hidden gifts of spirit communication. Sometimes healing doesn’t arrive through tears. Sometimes it comes through the laughter of recognition, the sound of a son still being exactly who he was, and the reminder that love still knows how to make us smile.
More evidence came through about both his life and his passing, details far too specific to deny. Everyone in the room understood exactly what he was communicating and he was in the room with us expressing his thought and emotions of love.
But his main message was simple:
Start living again.
His death had caused so many of the people who loved him to become frozen in grief. He wanted them to move forward and truly live again for him.
After they left, I still kept hearing the song in my head, but I still couldn’t place it.
That night, as I was drifting to sleep, Josiah started talking to me again.
He said:
“Look up A Thousand Miles.”
The next morning, with a little help from the internet, I finally found the song that had been haunting me:
A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton.
As I watched the video, I was stunned.
Vanessa Carlton oddly looked so much like Jennifer.
The symbolism in the song and video felt layered with meaning.
I immediately sent it to her.
Then it all clicked.
The song was tied to one of my favorite comedy movies, White Chicks.
And suddenly the deeper message became clear.
Josiah wanted his family to watch that movie together.
He wanted laughter back in the house.
He wanted them to remember joy.
He wanted them to heal through the medicine of shared laughter, even if only for a little while.
Sometimes that is how spirit works.
Even for a moment, laughter can lift the heaviness of grief and let light back into the room.
And sometimes… it arrives through a song you can almost hear.
Disclaimer
Jennifer has graciously approved my sharing of her sitting and gave me permission to use Josiah’s name.
Her exact words were:
“Of course you can. You can use his name. He would love to hear that, and the whispers of his name carry forward.”
I always honor my clients’ privacy first. That is deeply important to me and part of the sacred trust within this work.
And yet, there are some readings that, with a client’s blessing, simply need to be told.
They carry healing.
They carry love.
And sometimes they carry a message that may help someone else move through their own grief.
This is one of those stories.
